Described by the Toronto Star as “one of Toronto’s most exciting playwrights,” Michael Ross Albert is a writer and indie theatre producer whose work has been staged across Canada, the United States, and the United Kingdom.

Recently, Crow’s Theatre commissioned and produced the world premiere of Michael’s new play, The Bidding War, a large-scale ensemble comedy about the local housing crisis and the lengths to which ordinary people will go to secure “the last nice house in Toronto.”

Other recent production credits include Beautiful Renegades, a historical fiction inspired by Toronto’s avant-garde dance community in the 1970s (commissioned by Peggy Baker, directed by Eda Holmes), as well as When I’m Gone (Mountain Movers Theatre Company, directed by Kim Willard), and Two Minutes to Midnight (The Assembly Theatre, directed by Janelle Cooper).

His work has been presented in multiple Fringe festivals, including Edinburgh, Brighton, and FringeNYC. Five of his plays were staged in the Toronto Fringe Festival, including The Huns, directed by Marie Farsi, Anywhere, directed by David Lafontaine (both: Patron’s Pick and Best of Fringe), and most recently, Good Old Days, directed by Jill Harper.

In association with the Storefront Theatre, Michael produced the world premiere of his play Tough Jews. The production was nominated for six Dora Awards including Outstanding New Play and Outstanding Production.

Michael is currently developing plays commissioned by the Stratford Festival and the Blyth Festival, as well as new works supported by Soulpepper Theatre and the Vault Creation Lab.
